Talk by Captain Steve Higham RN, former commander of HMS Defender

We were delighted to welcome Steve Higham, freeman of the Worshipful Company of Fletchers, for an informal virtual talk on Monday 21 June. Steve kindly agreed to share with us his thoughts on his recent experiences, both at sea and in Number 10, and what a fascinating and stimulating presentation he gave us. The Company's links with Steve began in 2015 when he was commander of our affiliated ship, HMS Defender. He spoke in particular of the challenges of a nine month deployment for a crew of 250 men, and the incredible recharging batteries experience of visiting the Indian fleet review - the biggest for 25 years in that area. For the last four and half years he has worked at the centre of government, first for the National Security Advisor and then as military advisor to Prime Minister May and private secretary to Prime Minister Johnson integrating the various defence, international development and relations, and intelligence strands - as he emphasised the value of such 'joined up thinking'. He is about to begin a new deployment as captain of HMS The Prince of Wales, for which the Company wished him the very best. And we shall also take to heart his stress on the importance of reservists in all services.
