The sixth para archery WA18 and WA VI took place on Sunday 3rd February 2019. This was the first year that the event was registered with Archery GB as a national WA VI event. I understand that Archery GB have only recently started retaining VI records.
We were, once again, supported by VI archers from around the country, with eight taking part. Some shot both sessions and one shot different bow types in each session. As in previous years, Deer Park Archer club members were happy to volunteers to ‘spot’ for VI archers.
We also had a number of physically disabled archers taking part, from local club members through to Phoebe Pine (GB team). Some of the para archers saw the competition as a chance to compete for the first time, in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Once again, a credit to the reputation of Deer Park club members !
Unfortunately, there were not enough para classified archers to warrant having medals for their own categories. The event was promoted by British Wheelchair Archery Association (BWAA) but we did not have any BWAA archers taking part.
It is also worth noting that this competition is proving popular with those archers with less visible disabilities, such as autism.
The cost of the venue and hiring the bosses continues to be the biggest issue. Without the donation from Worshipful Co of Fletchers, we would not be able to hold this event and we are extremely grateful for their support !
