The day was made extra special by having our own Freeman, Brigadier Jeremy Lamb MC as the Armed Forces co-signee, an excellent carpet guard from out affiliated cadets and affiliate prize-winners both RAF Northolt and 135 Detachment Army Cadet Force. What followed was a very enjoyable lunch with much friendship and revelry.

Following on from the IBSA World Games, the Company and the Trustees were delighted to receive a letter from the VI Open Category Gold Medal winner, Terry Piper, one of the athletes who the Trust has supported. The letter is reproduced below, with Terry’s permission:

Dear Andrew

As a visually impaired wheelchair archer with several years’ experience, I recognised the potential advantages of receiving specialised coaching tailored to my specific needs. My intention was to concentrate on refining my technique, particularly since it had evolved over time due to the progression of my disabilities.

In 2019, I had the opportunity to participate in a few coaching weekends organised by the British Wheelchair Archery Association and the British Blind Sports Archery Section. During one of these events, I had the pleasure of mee????ng several committee members affiliated with the Worshipful Company of Fletchers. They observed the condition of my equipment, which showed signs of wear and tear. In light of this, they kindly recommended that I explore the possibility of applying for a grant offered by the Fletchers to support my future equipment needs.

I must confess that I initially didn't act upon the advice to secure the equipment grant. It wasn't until I attended another British Blind Sports Archery event at Stoke Mandeville that a member of the Fletchers followed up with me, prompting me to finally submit my application for the grant.

Anticipating a cumbersome and intricate grant application process, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the form was quite straight forward too complete. To my astonishment, the process turned out to be uncomplicated and relatively hassle-free. Merely a few days after submitting my grant application for processing, I received a prompt response from the Fletchers, notifying me that the grant had been approved. I was advised to coordinate with Clickers Archery, the company that had initially supplied the equipment quote, to proceed further.

I must confess, I felt a surge of excitement and had a hard ????me comprehending that such an exceptional organisation as the Fletchers was indeed willing to financially support my acquisition of the new archery equipment.

Within a week, Clickers Archery promptly delivered to me a new bow, limbs, a sight, and various bow accessories. While I was eager to receive this equipment, the onset of the Covid pandemic had begun, and like countless others, I found myself unable to engage in archery at my local club (The Bowmen of the Deans), for many months. Thankfully, I have a modest 20-meter range at my home, allowing me to utilise my time to meticulously set up and tune the equipment and grow accustomed to its features.

As the Covid pandemic gradually subsided, I embarked on training for events like the annual Inclusion Shoot hosted by the Deer Park Archers and the National Disability Championship held at Lilleshall. With my new bow, I had the privilege of securing several medals in recent years, a testament to the unwavering trust and support extended by the Worshipful Company of Fletchers. This year, I had the fortunate opportunity to participate in the International Blind Sports Federation World Games held in Birmingham, winning gold in the Visually Impaired Open category.

There is no doubt that the generous financial support from the Worshipful Company of Fletchers played a crucial role in enabling me to enhance my archery skills using the new equipment.

In conclusion, I am deeply grateful for the invaluable support rendered not only to me but also to fellow disabled archers by organisations like the Fletchers. I extend my gratitude to various charities and companies that champion diversity and inclusive sports, particularly within the realm of archery. Your support is genuinely cherished and very much appreciated.

Yours sincerely,
Terry Piper

Fletchers Tartan Pictures

The Worshipful Company of Fletchers are pleased to unveil their new officially registered Tartan after a successful collaboration with designer Margaret Anne Lawson at the Ministry of Tartan.  We think we may be the first Livery Company in the City of London to have their own tartan, it is a wonderful modern reflection of Fellowship one of our key tenants as ancient Livery Company.  Look out for the Tartan at the Lord Mayors Parade as the Fletchers will be in the ancient company walking float.

Family Archery Day at Guildford AC

On 29 July, 14 Fletchers and friends visited Guildford Archery Club for an afternoon of instruction and light-hearted competition.

Stuart Edwards and Steve Tully of GAC were our friendly hosts, along with their coaching colleagues.  The sun shone, and despite a breeze most of the arrows hit the targets!

Beneficiaries of the coaching were Celia Campbell and Dan Spenser, who won the ladies and men’s beginners’ competitions.

Among the experienced archers, winners were:

Men’s Recurve – Andrew Trapnell

Ladies’ Recurve – Melanie Trapnell

Longbow – Gordon Sharp

Barebow – Roy Campbell

We finished the day with a fun shoot at figures on a mini medieval castle, using longbows donated to GAC from the Agincourt Appeal.  GAC also have two Agincourt inscribed benches at their clubhouse, from the same appeal.  We then enjoyed coffee and cakes with our hosts.  All agreed that this event should be repeated (but perhaps avoiding school holiday times).

The Great Britain Para Archery Team has recently been competing at the Para World Championships in Pilsen, Czech Republic, and some of the archers supported by the Fletchers Trust have been very successful!

Some 10 archers of the British Team have been supported by the Trust, and the following Medals were won!

After this first day of finals at the World Championships, Great Britain was at the top of the Medal Table.

The event also marked the first time the athletes could win places at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games for their countries, and the GBR Team were successful in securing two (2) Compound Women Open places, and one (1) Compound Men Open place at the Games. (Currently VI archery is not a part of the Paralympics).

Our congratulations to all of the team for some great performances and particularly to those who won the medals and the places for GBR at the Paralympics!

Jamie writes

"I’m writing to say a huge thank you for helping me with the purchase of my Mathews TRX 38 G2 compound bow and set of Easton ProComp arrows. It’s been a few months now and I’m seeing huge benefits as well as really enjoying shooting them.

I researched and tried several bows before settling on the TRX. A smooth draw cycle and shot are paramount for me shooting with one arm and the Mathews won out in those departments. I have always shot Easton arrows and the ProComps are up there with the best they have to offer.

As well as being a smooth draw I have found that the bow is much more stable to hold, likely because the riser is 6 inches longer than my previous bow. I can also handle more draw weight as it is easier to draw and get very nice shot feedback as there is no vibration whatsoever.

Overall the biggest benefit is having top end equipment that is tuned and performing very well as it leaves me room to focus on myself and what I am doing.

So far my best achievement with the new equipment is shooting a national record for the WA900 round with a score of 829. I was happy with the score but more-so about how I shot throughout the round. With my equipment performing flawlessly I was able to shoot the round intelligently and course correct myself when I was noticing differences in arrow groupings as the round progressed.

It also goes without saying that I really enjoy shooting my bow and arrows, the noise that the bow makes is sublime!

I’m working hard to improve and have at least 2 more competitions coming up this outdoor season. I’ll send you another update towards the end of the season to let you know how I am getting on."

Many thanks again.
Jamie

Update from Piangfan whose grant for a new bow and arrows - I picked up my new recurve setup  from Merlin's Archery. I will be attending multiple UK record status competitions over the next few months and this will help a lot. I broke my personal best in practice for the National round by 14 points after having the new bow for a week.
It's been great so far. Once again, please give my thanks to the trustees for their support.
